Repetition of a lie does not make it truth. -- FDR

I think all of the problems of the world could be solved. If all of the leaders of the world could learn to Lindy Hop, and if something happens, they say, "Okay, I'll meet you out on the floor -- we'll see who can outdance the other one." If they could do that, then there wouldn't be any wars. You know, we could forget all of that other violent stuff and just dance it off…...get out and dance, because you wouldn't have time to think about anything else, and you would enjoy dancing so much that you wouldn't want to do anything else. Now, this is what happened to me and some of the other Lindy Hoppers coming up. We were always in the Savoy, day and night, and we danced and danced and we danced. And we didn't have time to take drugs or drink whiskey and all of that stuff. Our high was dancing. "Say, you wanna get high?" "Yeah, man, let's go up and listen to Chick Webb." That's how we got high. ——Frankie Manning, City Arts interview

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. -------- Martin Luther King, Jr. Strength to Love 1963

Remember that dance has a dimension beyond the physical.  The body-as imperfect as it always is-is only part of the picture.  Your energy, the quality of your movement, your feeling about the world, your dance spirit-that is what we see under the lights --------- Dance Magazine 3/05

I also had a will that let me eliminate everything that stood in the way of my becoming the best dancer I could be.  By a gradual process...I had invested every bit of my dreams, my hopes, my energies in defining myself as a dancer....I began to discriminate between fear and excitement.  The two, though very close, are completely different.  Fear is negative excitement, choking your imagination.  Real excitement produces an energy that overcomes apprehension and makes you want to close in on your goal. --------- - Twyla Tharpe

Yeah, I kind of introduced aerials as steps, as we called them at that time. I introduced them into the Lindy Hop because (an) air step is done in time with the music, which is different from lifts that are done in ballroom dancing. In ballroom dancing, lifts have been there for a long time, where the male partner picks up his female partner gracefully and holds her above his head and he twirls her and he sets her gently on the floor smoothly. In the Lindy Hop you just take the girl and say, "Listen, you just gotta land in time with the music," and you just throw them. Well, I kind of introduced that into Lindy Hopping. And we call it an air step because that's the way that we envisioned it -- as a step. We said, This has to be done in time with the music. It's not a lift -- it's a step -- so you gotta do it as a step.

A dancing statement

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning'. ---- unknown

Dancing, is for the most part, attended with many amorous smiles, wanton compliments, unchaste kisses, scurrilous songs and sonnets, effeminate music, lust provoking attire, ridiculous love pranks, all which savor only of sensuality, of raging fleshy lusts. Therefore it is to be wholly abandoned by all good Chrstians.
Dancing serves no necessary use, no profitable, laudable or pious end at all. It is only from the iimbred pravity vanity, wantonness, incontenancy, pride, profaneness, or madness of man's depraved nature. Therefore, it must needs must be unlawful unto Christians.
The eay tp heaven is too steep, too narrow for men to dance in and keep revel rout. No way is large or smooth enough
for capering rousters, for jumping, skipping, dancing dames but that broad, beaten, pleasant road that leads to HELL. The gate of heaven is too narrow for whole rounds, whole troops of dancers to march in together. ---------- Histriomastix (1632), Puritan William Prynne
